This exam must be ordered by a physician, is billable to insurance if criteria met per insurance plan

You should wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing on the day of your examination. On the day of the DEXA exam you may eat normally. Do not take calcium supplements for at least 24hours before your exam.

– Females: over age 50/post menopausal/ compression fractures
– Males: over age 70/ height loss/compression fractures

DEXA is performed to measure the strength, density and mineral content of the bone. It is most often used to diagnose osteoporosis, a condition that often affects women after menopause but also may be found in men. Osteoporosis involves a gradual loss of calcium, as well as structural changes, causing bones to become more brittle, fragile and likely to break.

DEXA helps your physician track the effectiveness of treatment for osteoporosis. This test is strongly recommended if you:

– Are post-menopausal and are not taking estrogen
– Have a personal or maternal history of hip fracture or smoking
– Are a post-menopausal woman who is tall (over 5’7″) or less than 125 pounds
– Are a man with clinical conditions associated with bone loss
– Use medications that are known to cause bone loss (such as prednisone)
– Have type 1 diabetes, liver, kidney disease or a family history of osteoporosis
– Have high bone turnover, which shows up as excessive collagen in urine samples
– Have a thyroid condition
– Have a parathyroid condition
– Have experienced a fracture after only mild trauma
– Have had x-ray evidence of vertebral fracture or other signs of osteoporosis
